Magnolia United Church of Christ views music as an integral part of the worship experience. The fifteen-member choir sings weekly four-part anthems, drawing from a variety of styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, contemporary Classical, contemporary Christian, Gospel, spirituals, Jewish, folk, musical theatre, pop, oldies, and more. Some choir members are experienced musicians, while others are exploring choral singing for the first time; the weekly Thursday night rehearsals combine musicianship and community.

For Christmas and Easter Sunday services, the choir prepares festive works with guest soloists and instrumentalists. Recent examples have included Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs, selections from Handel’s Messiah, Renaissance Christmas music with brass quartet, Haydn’s Saint Nicholas Mass, and settings of Alleluia texts with percussion. Christmas Eve services often feature a range of ensembles, from multi-generational string quartets to folk bands and harp soloists.

On many Sundays throughout the year, small groups of singers and/or instrumentalists provide additional musical offerings: Beatles songs with singers and guitar, trombone quartets playing Bach chorales, violin and piano sonatas, musical theatre duets, and beyond. The pianist/organist enriches worship with contemplative music and leads the congregation in traditional and contemporary hymns each week.

The Sanctuary at MUCC is also an ideal location for concerts. Local and visiting ensembles have enjoyed the clear acoustics and played our beautiful Steinway grand piano and 1949 Wicks organ. Visit our Community Usage page for more information.

MUCC loves to welcome new choir members, and to invite musicians to share their gifts in Sunday services.
